Job Title: Web & IT Project Lead

Job Description:

The Web & IT Project Lead will be responsible for initiating and managing a redesign of the Sustainable Waterloo website, from concept to delivery; as well as working with Sustainable Waterloo’s existing web team to provide much needed upgrades to existing internal tools and to an online community for Regional Carbon Initiative members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Website Redesign (25 hrs/week): Having grown Sustainable Waterloo’s website from 3 pages to over 45 without a formal CMS or web content strategy, the team is in need of a formal review of the current site with a view towards redesigning and migrating existing content and tools over to a more user-friendly, accessible and web 2.0 style website

• Internal Tool Upgrades (5 hrs/week): Several internal tools built over the past year require significant upgrades, including:
o Event registration: Sustainable Waterloo hosts 9 events annually with the dual purpose of attracting new members to its Regional Carbon Initiative, and providing valuable learning opportunities on subjects relating to the tracking, reduction, and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions. The Web & IT Project Lead will support upgrades to the current event registration tool.
o HR Management: This tool is used by the HR team to manage open volunteer & staff positions at Sustainable Waterloo, and it requires significant work to improve usability
o File Management: This tool is used by the team to easily share files with external stakeholders on Sustainable Waterloo’s web server. It is not reliable in current form and requires significant work.

• Online Community Upgrades (10 hrs/week): Launched this past September, Sustainable Waterloo’s online community for Regional Carbon Initiative members – called “MemberLink†– requires several key upgrades to improve back-end administration, usability, and to add several features that were not prioritized in the launch of the community.

Skills needed to be successful in this role:

• Strong experience with XHTML, CSS, JavaScript (including jQuery), PHP, MySQL
• Experience in graphic design and layout as these apply to web technologies is an asset
• Familiar with FTP clients

Time commitment: 20 weeks, starting asap to March 18, 2011

This position is being funded through the YMCA’s Post-Secondary Graduate Youth Eco Internship Program (PSYEIP) with funding provided by the Government of Canada. This program places unemployed youth aged 15 to 30 from diverse backgrounds into paid internship opportunities within the private, non-profit, public, and charitable service sectors in Canada with a focus on the environment and community.
Applicants must meet ALL eligibility criteria for the program in order to be considered:
• between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the time of placement;
• not receiving Employment Insurance benefit;
• a graduate of a post-secondary education program;
• be unemployed; or underemployed (working 20 hours or less on a regular basis); or working in a job that does not match your area of educational study;
• out of school;
• a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee status has been conferred;
• legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations;
• have a social insurance number;
• willing to complete a Police Records Check.

Youth who previously participated in the Youth Eco Internship Program will not be considered
