We are seeking an individual(s) (up to two, depending on pool of applicants and programmatic need) to assist in the monitoring, verification, and accounting program of a field investigation to sequester CO2 in geologic formations.

Responsibilities: The successful individual(s) will conduct multi-disciplinary field activities; purchase, install, monitor, and maintain a variety of geophysical, hydrological, and chemical field equipment; collect field data and samples; assist in the chemical and physical analysis of samples collected in the field or generated in the laboratory; assist in data interpretation and presentation; enter and maintain information in databases; assist in preparing written reports of research results for publication and presentation to the public and scientific colleagues; participate in other geologic/environmental research as assigned; and train and supervise students.

Qualifications: Required: Bachelor’s degree in geology, geophysics, environmental science, chemical, civil or environmental engineering, or related discipline. Ability to document activities in field and lab notes and written reports. Skills in word processing and spreadsheet software. Ability to work independently. Ability to prioritize, accomplish tasks, and meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills to establish friendly, open, and clear communication with others. Ability and willingness to effectively contribute as part of a team. Ability to train and supervise students. Preferred: Master’s degree in geology, geophysics, environmental science, chemical, civil environmental engineering, or related discipline. Two years experience. Experience in field hydrogeology and/or geochemistry such as collecting and describing core samples, installing groundwater monitoring wells, and collecting and analyzing environmental samples. Experience in using and maintaining field equipment. Experience in supporting multi-disciplinary research efforts that can include geophysics, hydrology, geochemistry, and geology. Knowledge of environmental monitoring techniques and CO2 sequestration technologies. Knowledge and experience using analytical chemical methods such as titrating, ion selective electrodes, and ion chromatography to determine chemical characteristics of aqueous samples. Working knowledge of laboratory techniques and safety procedures. Skills in database, statistics, and graphics software.

The work of this position takes place in an office, chemical laboratory, and in the field. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time working at a computer, using a keyboard and mouse, and using repetitive hand motions. May be exposed to chemical odors and fumes. Must comply with requirements for personal protective equipment and safety regulations. A significant amount of field work will be required; therefore, must be willing and able to be away from home for extended periods. Must be willing and able to perform field work, some of which may be under less than ideal conditions (inclement weather, remoteness and moderate physical exertion). Must be able to lift and carry items, such as field equipment, weighing at least 50 pounds.

This is a visiting full-time position paid on a 12-month basis. Position may become a regular position at a later date depending on funding and programmatic need. The duration of current available funding is multi-year. The starting date is negotiable after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
