The annual Sustainable Brands conference brings the leaders in sustainability, brand and design together for 4 days of conversation. We need a multi-talented designer who can assist in designing for web and print, is comfortable juggling multiple projects and is passionate about sustainability.

You will be working with the Design Manager and marketing team to produce a broad variety of conference materials. Ranging from web pages and e-newsletters to signage and event guides. You are guaranteed to gain a large amount of portfolio pieces by completing this internship.

We need 10-15 hours of work per week, of which at least 8 should be from our offices in San Francisco (the remainder can be done remotely if preferred). The internship will run until the conference in early June.

Skills:
- Adept at using Adobe Creative Suite software i.e. Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, InDesign and bonus points for Flash or After Effects experience.
- HTML/CSS knowledge preferred, but not required
- Highly attuned attention to detail
- Good team player
- Familiarity with brand guidelines and maintaining design consistency

This internship is unpaid but in addition to the opportunity to plug in with a terrific team of media and sustainable business experts, this position offers full travel, board and admission to the Sustainable Brands Conference 2012 in San Diego from 4-7 June. The Future We Want (FWW) is a global initiative to envision what we want our lives and communities to be like 20 years from now. In this unique project, Natural Capitalism Solutions is collaborating with the United Nations to conduct a global conversation about the future of communities and to turn the best ideas into life-like videos and computer animations that allow people to “see†what living in sustainable communities would be like. Using modern technologies from the web and social media to traditional grassroots communication we intend to reach people on a worldwide scale and ask them to submit their visions for a positive future.

We will gather submissions from all over the world, ranging from solutions for addressing poverty and injustice, to strategies for creating sustainable and environmentally responsible communities. Our aim is to gather potential solutions about our future and then deliver them to those who can pursue and implement them. With the assistance of the UN, we will make these ideas visible to the public and influencers beginning with the Rio+20 Conference in June 2012.

Internship Duties:

The intern will:
•Be responsible for assuring the quality of the conversation around the Future We Want.
•Monitor the input received from around the world to screen submissions before posting, including those from the web site, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
•Help identify the best ideas for consideration, including those for the Rio exhibit.
•Conduct research to identify existing examples of sustainable development and identify other similar “visioning†projects around the world.
•Take active part in innovative discussions and planning sessions involving critical thinking about sustainability issues and practice.
•Receive recognition for work on published reports.
•Interact as directed with The Future We Want’s leadership, International Advisory Committee, and Creative Team.
•Participate in local conferences, industry & networking events, & staff meetings.

Required Qualifications:
•Exceptional research skills and experience
•Sufficient knowledge of current international affairs to recognize submissions to the global conversation that are inappropriate
•Proficiency with Microsoft Office
•Working knowledge of social media

Responsibilities:
The Center for Environmental Health is a national organization based out of Oakland, CA opening its first office in New York City. A major focus of the New York office is on the toxic and environmental health impacts of energy. The intern’s primary responsibilities will be assisting with research project related to a report detailing different energy sources and solutions and their related environmental health issues. Examples of duties include conducting a literature review of the field, and depending upon the intern’s skillset, producing a chapter of the report. In addition, the intern will be responsible for assistance in establishing a new regional office. For example, researching the landscape of organizations in the field and region, identifying speaking opportunities, and clerical duties not to exceed 25% of the time.

Qualifications Required:
The ideal candidate is:
• Interested and experienced in environmental health and social justice.
• Someone who genuinely enjoys -and takes pride in- writing research papers.
• Self-motivated.
• A good communicator, (both verbally and on paper).
• Familiar with research databases.

Hours and Commitment: We are a small, diverse group with a big mission. In the past, interns have sometimes been awarded academic credit for their work at CEH. 20 hours per week would be ideal, but for the right candidate we could work with 10 hours per week

The Product Stewardship Institute (PSI) seeks an enterprising individual who thrives in a fast-paced, small organization. PSI is conducting cutting-edge work on product stewardship and sustainability, and seeks interns who have energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. PSI interns work on a variety of tasks, which allow them to become informed about current stewardship programs in a variety of product industries. PSI staff assists interns in developing one or two specific projects for which the intern can take primary responsibility. Interns also perform some administrative assignments, as do all staff. There are significant learning opportunities pertaining to substantive initiatives.

Application Due Date: February 10, 2012

Time Commitment: Approximately 15- 20 hours/week with a possibility of additional hours or a full-time opportunity during breaks and summer.

Compensation: Unpaid, with potential for paid over time, pending funding.

Potential tasks might include:

•Conduct research to support ongoing product stewardship projects that have the potential to change the current paradigm of waste management.
•Develop and assist in writing and editing technical documents, and summarizing legislation.
•Update PSI’s website and assist on press and communications.
•Work with PSI members across the country to build coalitions on legislative priorities.
•Assist in developing funding proposals.
•Organize national contact lists and databases to enhance the organization’s ability to communicate with its constituents, and conduct other administrative tasks.

Qualifications
Interns should have excellent organization and communication skills, both written and oral, and be passionate about moving toward a more sustainable future. Ideal candidates will have academic or professional experience or knowledge related to environmental advocacy and/or a sufficient background in environmental and public health issues. Ideal candidates may have an undergraduate or graduate degree in policy, political science, natural science, environmental science, law, business administration, or a related field. Alternatively, interns may be a degree candidate in one of these areas. The intern’s thoughts and ideas will be considered seriously as a contribution to improving the organization as a whole, as well as forwarding its mission.

Internship with the Responsible Purchasing Network

Location: Oakland, CA. Our office is in Preservation Park – about a ten-minute walk from the 12th St Civic Center-Oakland BART stop.

Background Information: The Responsible Purchasing Network (RPN) is an international network of buyers dedicated to socially responsible and environmentally sustainable purchasing. Our membership program and consulting services provide institutional purchasers with cutting edge procurement tools and resources designed to save money, conserve resources, reduce waste, and improve efficiency.

We work to promote and practice responsible purchasing by identifying best practices, developing effective purchasing tools, educating the market, and using our collective purchasing power to maximize environmental stewardship, protect human health, and support local and global sustainability.

Timeframe: This is a winter position to occur between early/mid January until late April or May, ideally for 2-3 days (12 – 20 hours) per week. The scheduling for this internship is flexible.

Compensation: While this is an unpaid position, interns will be reimbursed for commuting via public transportation (telecommuting is an option for those interested). We will also work with you to receive college credit, when applicable.

Description: RPN is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to contribute to our team. Applicants should have a genuine interest in learning more about sustainable purchasing for large organizations such as city, state, and local governments, colleges and universities, and businesses.

Responsibilities will likely include:
• Researching the environmental and social consequences of specific product categories (such as office supplies, computers, cleaning equipment, passenger vehicles, deicing solutions, etc.)
• Investigating state and local-level “green†purchasing policies and programs
• Developing case studies on successful green purchasing initiatives
• Administering and drafting RPN’s annual survey and Responsible Purchasing Trends Report
• Helping with general administrative work (approximately 25% of time) and other tasks as required.

Qualifications:

• Expert level written and verbal communication and writing skills
• Strong decision making ability
• Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Outstanding organizational skills
• Previous experience working in an office environment
• Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office
• Self-motivated, positive attitude and flexible nature
• Excellent research skills with a focus on the ability to aggregate large amounts of information, sometimes technical, and create succinct, user-friendly tools (e.g. fact sheets and case studies) from findings
• Previous internships in the sustainability field a plus
• Knowledge or experience in procurement or eco-labels is preferred, but not required.
