Professional Qualifications: A Ph.D. or equivalent in Environmental Engineering or a related engineering or science field from an accredited college or university is strongly preferred at the time of appointment. Candidates with considerable progress towards degree completion will be considered. Completion of the terminal degree is required prior to the start of the second probationary year. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following disciplines: Water Quality, Air Quality, Ecological/Restoration Engineering, and/or Emerging Contaminants. Registration as a professional engineer is highly desirable.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
• Potential for or record of research, scholarly and/or creative activity, involving students whenever possible;
• Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies ;
• Ability and/or interest in teaching a broad range of courses to diverse students (majors, general education students, etc.)
• Ability and/or interest in preparing individuals to function in a culturally and ethnically diverse society.

At the time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.

Professional Duties: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence in an undergraduate program and to building a strong research record. Responsibilities include teaching for the Environmental Resources Engineering Department. The courses assigned to the candidates will include engineering classes in the candidate’s area of expertise. Course assignments will also include other department courses in basic engineering science (Statics, Strength of Materials, and Introduction to Design, etc.). Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. Candidates should be interested in undergraduate and graduate research programs and in securing external funding for research. Opportunities exist for participating in two options of the Environmental Systems graduate program: Environmental Resources Engineering (ERE) and Energy Technology and Policy (ETaP). The Environmental Resources Engineering Department has direct faculty and student links to the world-famous Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, Schatz Energy Research Center, and the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology. Opportunities exist to collaborate with and/or conduct research through these entities.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

Position & Purpose

Xanterra is seeking a regional environmental affairs and engineering manager for its Ohio State Park operations to serve as that region’s environmental conscience and building systems expert, working to make Xanterra’s Ohio State Park operations a national leader in environmentally responsible business and tourism practices. This person will also spend at least half of his/her time working with Xanterra management, engineering, and maintenance personnel in a supervisory role in regards to engineering projects and issues that exist in the region. Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Develop, implement, and maintain environmental strategies and programs for Xanterra’s Ohio operations consistent with the company’s environmental management system (Ecologix). Working with the corporate environmental affairs department, achieve and maintain a self-certification of the EMS under the ISO 14001 standard.
2. Responsible for engineering projects/tasks as assigned by on-site General Managers and the Vice President, Parks North, as well as advising property staff concerning on-going engineering issues.
3. Provide support for engineering solutions to operational problems at property facilities.
4. Work with the General Managers, operations departments, and the corporate Vice President of Environmental Affairs to develop and implement environmental management programs and standards in the following areas:
ï‚§ Solid waste management
ï‚§ Energy and water efficiency of operational systems (including renewable energy)
ï‚§ Pollution prevention and waste reduction
ï‚§ Sustainable design and construction practices (including the LEED rating system)
ï‚§ Hazardous materials and waste management
ï‚§ Air emissions control/permitting
ï‚§ Environmental communication and education
ï‚§ Comprehensive affirmative procurement strategies, and
ï‚§ Underground and aboveground storage tanks (fuel dispensing and storage management).
ï‚§ Storm water Management
5. Coordinate with property departments – such as maintenance and purchasing – in implementing projects, setting standards, and monitoring results on environmental and engineering goals.
6. Serve as an environmental and engineering liaison between Xanterra and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) as it pertains to Maintenance Reserve and Repair (MR&R) projects at the Ohio Parks.
7. Develop and implement appropriate training programs to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company requirements. Provide training to local maintenance staffs to increase their knowledge of their facilities and improve their skill sets as we maintain the facilities to ODNR standards.
8. Work with Xanterra’s Vice President of Environmental Affairs and property General Managers to ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal environmental statutes and regulations and minimize legal liabilities from potential hazards. This may include regulatory requirements with hazardous materials, hazardous waste (RCRA), universal waste, CFCs/halons, asbestos, lead-based paint, PCBs, pesticides, and fuel storage and delivery system management.
9. Serve as environmental spokesperson for Xanterra’s Ohio State Park operations: communicating with and educating guests and employees; and working with ODNR and other governmental agencies on resolving environmental challenges and achieving goals.
10. Provide oversight of MR&R expenditures on maintenance contracts and repairs for the Ohio Parks to make sure best value for our expenditures.
11. Prepare and maintain a 5 year running Capital Plan.
12. Prepare, monitor, and document effective preventative maintenance processes for operational, guest, and public space equipment and facilities.
13. Promote company environmental stewardship with local, regional, and national environmental groups through committee participation and award application/recognition.
14. Develop energy conservation measures that reduce energy costs and Xanterra’s carbon footprint for the Ohio parks. This includes coordinating energy audits with energy consultants and evaluating results and select priorities for implementing results of the audits.
15. Research, test, and implement proactive environmental and engineering technologies and procedures not only for Ohio operations but also to share with other applicable Xanterra operations.
16. Develop and manage a regional “Green Team,†holding regularly scheduled meetings and establish goals and objectives for the committee.
17. Measure impact of programs and prepare required reports for Xanterra and the ODNR. Communicate these results with outside stakeholders.
18. Analyze for effectiveness and improve Xanterra’s Ohio State Park environmental and engineering projects, and develop new environmental and engineering programs and procedures, as necessary.
19. Analyze facilities for feasibility of implementing US Green Building Council LEED Existing Building certification.
20. Serve on the Xanterra Incident Response Team and comply with all current safety and health requirements.
21. Position may be required to serve in an on-call capacity for non-business hours support if it is determined this is needed by the Vice President, Parks North and Vice President of Environmental Affairs.

We are currently seeking a Principal Scientific Engineering Associate to join our Energy Analysis Department. Under minimal instruction, the person in this role will analyze and evaluate technologies for saving energy in residential and commercial buildings through the application of information technology, particularly wireless sensor networks. The Principal Engineering Associate provides multifunctional technical support and coordination for research projects, as well as investigates, creates and develops new methods and techniques for project advancement. The person in this role is also involved in all aspects of research projects, including conceptual research projects; prepare funding proposals, data collection in laboratory and field settings, analyze data, document results, and manage research teams. Work products are delivered in a format that is easily understood by policy-makers, as well as publish peer-reviewed literature. This position acts as a liaison between scientists and scientific, technical, and administrative support within the Lab.

Duties
(1) Working under minimal guidance, develop new scientific/engineering theories and methods for analyzing and evaluating technologies that save energy in residential and commercial buildings through application of information technology:
– Specify, design, test, and deploy wireless network and embedded computing/control systems (both hardware and software) for collection and processing of energy data.
– Design and develop tools and systems to manage and analyze large energy-related datasets.
- Serve as an energy-efficiency technical expert for technology standards committees, such as IEEE and IETF.
– Prepare technical papers for peer-reviewed journals and final reports in fulfillment of contract deliverables.
- Present research results to diverse audiences (e.g., technical conferences and project reviews).
(2) Play a significant role in managing research projects:
– Significantly contribute to defining research objectives and methods for application of information technology to saving energy.

– Serve as an expert within EETD for wireless networking, embedded computing, and application of electrical engineering principles to energy research.

Qualification
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in electrical engineering or a related field, and 6-8 years related professional technical experience.
• Demonstrated expertise deploying large-scale wireless sensor networks in buildings.
• Demonstrated experience specifying, designing, implementing, and testing embedded computing and communication systems.
• Knowledge of methods for collecting equipment saturation and energy data in buildings.
• Demonstrated familiarity with energy use of miscellaneous and electronic loads in buildings.
• Proficiency with statistical study design and analysis for energy-use data.
• Ability to conceptually define and manage research projects.
• Demonstrated ability to interact independently and effectively with funding agencies, to determine the needs of these clients, and to develop research plans that meet these needs.
• Proven ability to supervise day-to-day tasks of research associates, other staff, and subcontractors.
• Familiarity with human-subjects policies and procedures.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently for several project managers, with minimal supervision.
• Ability to track the progress of several research projects and ensure their timely completion.
• Experience in independent processing and analysis of data.
• Advanced degree in engineering, preferred.
• Working knowledge of Python, C, or other computer programming languages is preferred.
