SUMMARY: Clipper Windpower is a growing company that has a reputation for innovative electro-mechanical design of wind turbines. This position is for a full time Sr. Mechanical Engineer to join the Mechanical Engineering Department in Carpinteria, CA. This is a great opportunity for the qualified and motivated individual to own the design and requirements of many complex and primary load-path critical large cast and welded components used in megawatt scale wind turbines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Casting design of large cast components
• Machining design of large cast components
• Manufacturing support of large cast and machined components
• Quality assurance support of large cast and machined components
• Design of weldments
• Manufacturing support of weldments
• Quality assurance support of weldments
• Releasing of drawings and bills of materials into production system
• Assume responsibility for engineering dispositions of part non-conformances
• Development of rework/repair procedures
• Report weekly work status to Supervisor
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES:
• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university
• Minimum of 3 years working experience designing, supporting the manufacturing and quality assurance of large cast and machined components or equivalent
• In-depth knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5M
• In-depth knowledge of cast iron and steel materials
• In-depth knowledge of casting foundry processes for iron and steel
• In-depth knowledge of non-destructive testing methods for cast iron and steel
• In-depth knowledge of heat treatments of iron and steel
• In-depth knowledge of American welding standards
• In-depth knowledge of non-destructive testing methods for weldments
• Proficiency in 3D modeling and drafting with Pro-Engineer Wildfire
• Proficiency in 3D model and drafting product life cycle software
• Proficiency in documentation control, engineering change management and enterprise resource planning systems
• Knowledge of and ability to operate in the Metric system
• Knowledge of AWS, EN and ISO standard specifications relevant to castings and weldments
• Ability to work under pressure in a fast paced environment
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Ability to work extra hours beyond 40 hours per week as project schedule/s may require
• Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time
• Ability to climb 80 m towers via ladder
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES:
• Master's of Science degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field of study
• In-depth knowledge of cast ductile iron materials and foundry processes
• In-depth knowledge of steel forging materials and processes
• Proficiency with Windchill PDMLink or ProIntralink
• Experience with computational casting process simulations (Magmasoft, etc.)
• Experience with solid mechanics finite element analysis (Femap, Nastran, etc.)
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Office work ~ 90%: Moderate noise (Example: business office with typewriters/printers, light traffic, etc.), comfortable temperatures, clean air
• Travel to manufacturing facilities, foundries, etc. ~ 5% Moderate to high levels of noise (Example: grinding equipment, etc.), comfortable to uncomfortable temperatures (near the pour deck at a foundry in China in the summer, etc.), clean to unclean air (foundry process particulate, etc.)
• Travel to wind turbine sites ~ 5% Moderate to high levels of noise (Example: noisy brakes, generators, etc.), comfortable to uncomfortable temperatures (climbing a tower in the summer, etc.), clean air
