The NYS Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) at RIT is a comprehensive training and applied research center designed to enhance understanding of pollution prevention techniques while also disseminating technologies to enhance these efforts. NYSP2I offers on-site technical assistance, research and development, technology transfer, and education to assist companies in decreasing – and in some cases eliminating – the production of air and solid waste as well as reducing the use of hazardous materials. NYSP2I also focuses on the acceleration of green technologies and greening of the supply chain.

Brief Posting Description

The NYS Pollution Prevention Institute (NYS P2I) is seeking a motivated Pollution Prevention (P2) Engineer. The Pollution Prevention Engineer will contribute to all aspects of the P2 program and will be primarily responsible for providing P2 technical assistance to industry and other identified sectors, providing technical support to regional P2 technical assistance providers, conducting research, and facilitating technology transfer of P2 technologies through workshops & outreach efforts.

Detailed Description

The Senior P2 Engineer will provide hands-on direct assistance to a broad array of NYS companies. This may include assessing manufacturing processes to identify areas of improvement, performing material & energy balances to identify baseline metrics, researching and identifying environmentally preferable & cost-effective alternatives, and assisting companies in meeting sustainability certifications/scorecards.

The Senior P2 Engineer will serve as project manager managing multiple, concurrent projects, as well as mentoring junior staff or co-ops on the project team. The Senior P2 Engineer will develop project proposals, final technical reports, trade articles, and case studies. He/she will also present project results to clients at all levels of the organization as well as develop and present P2 training and best practices workshops to stakeholders. The Senior P2 Engineer will also be responsible for assisting the team in searching for, applying and writing federal & state grant proposals. Therefore, excellent communication, writing and presentation skills are a requirement for this position., The Senior P2 Engineer will perform other tasks in support of the Institute as requested by the Director, which may include development of P2 assessment tools, research and technical support to regional technical assistance providers, and development and implementation of P2 priority setting and performance tracking programs to maximize program effectiveness.

Job Requirements

ï‚§ Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Environmental Engineering, M.S. or Ph.D. preferred.
ï‚§ Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen
ï‚§ Five-ten years of related work experience, with experience in the environment/pollution prevention (P2) field is preferred.
ï‚§ Project management experience
ï‚§ Strong presentation skills
ï‚§ Ideal candidate will be self-directed, with very strong oral and written communication skills.
ï‚§ Experience in writing proposals (federal, state and project oriented) and detailed final reports for industrial clients
ï‚§ Experience or working knowledge in some of the following areas preferred:
ï‚§ Sustainable Supply Chain
ï‚§ Green technology and engineering, design for the environment, systems analysis, life-cycle assessment
ï‚§ Manufacturing environment
ï‚§ Environmental assessments, technical assistance and training, pollution prevention technologies/approaches, environmental regulatory compliance
ï‚§ Preferred:
ï‚§ Lean Six Sigma knowledge
ï‚§ Experience leading a team and/or managing staff
