WRI’s Climate and Energy Program seeks an Associate for a lead position with its recently established “China Climate and Energy Information Networkâ€, also known as ChinaFAQs (www.chinafaqs.org). The Associate will work with a group of academic and other experts engaged with Chinese energy and climate programs and activities to disseminate data, analysis, and expert opinions on Chinese climate and energy actions. The goal of the Network is to track and communicate progress and pitfalls of China’s climate and energy actions to Congress, federal agencies, and U.S. opinion leaders. In addition, the Network develops comparative data, information, and analysis on the two countries to support mutual understanding on common actions.

The Associate will work with Network partners and other WRI ChinaFAQs staff on content and project management, and consult with senior staff on key decisions and overall strategy.

Responsibilities:
The Associate will be responsible for ensuring progress in the following key activity areas:

1. Facilitating an internationally renowned experts network
- Convene core network members
- Engage experts and share ongoing expert research and findings
- Provide common tools and information that can be accessed by network members

2. Preparing and maintaining up-to-date analysis and other information for decision makers and opinion leaders
- Prepare summaries of expert analysis
- Collect data and analysis from institutions in the U.S., China, and around the world
- Communicate critical data, statistics, and analysis – including by development of visual tools and images
- Catalogue media stories, data, and congressional questions to swiftly identify and respond to key concerns and issues as they arise in public debates and in Congressional offices on China’s energy and climate actions
- Prepare and disseminate outreach materials and messages
- Maintain and promote attractive and engaging web and other tools for communication and outreach

3. Outreach to Members of Congress and Others
- Identify key issues and concerns of Members of Congress and other decision makers and constituencies regarding China’s energy and climate policy, action, and progress
- Conduct briefings designed to leverage network expertise – group and one-on-one meetings
- Co-design and participate in events with other Institutions and groups

4. Outreach to concerned constituents
- Facilitate discussions and activities regarding U.S.-China competition and cooperation on climate and energy
- Share lessons, case studies, and data from the network with constituencies such as states, cities, business, and labor

5. Outreach to critical media outlets
- Print, broadcast, and online media
- Data and communications to influential constituencies

6. Fundraising
- Participate in efforts to maintain funding for the ChinaFAQs project
- Write fundraising proposals

Qualifications:
The Associate must have the following key competencies:
• At least 3-5 years of relevant professional experience, including project management experience.
• Detailed knowledge of climate and energy issues in relation to the U.S. and China and familiarity with the work of U.S. based China experts working in the field.
• Experience working with Congress and relevant federal agencies preferred.
• Experience working with a trade association, non-profit, or other U.S. organization involved with China a plus.
• Successful fundraising experience a plus.
• BA degree in relevant field, advanced degree a plus.
• Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams and to assert initiative and leadership.
• Excellent English writing and oral communication skills. Familiarity with Chinese language and culture an important plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and World Wide Web, capacity to turn raw data and statistical information into clear and visually compelling images and tools, and ability to maximize use of the web as a communications tool.
The successful Associate will be a motivated self-starter who has studied China and environmental issues or has knowledge of these areas that s/he seeks to pursue further; has experience or knowledge regarding Washington policy making; has strong writing and organizational skills; is capable of working independently; and has good interpersonal skills. S/he will work collaboratively with other WRI and external staff as circumstances require.
Salary and Benefits
Salary range low- to mid-$50’s, depending on qualifications. WRI offers a comprehensive benefits package.
