Grand Canyon Association/Grand Canyon, AZ (North and South Rims)

This internship will support Grand Canyon National Park’s Archeology Program by helping complete archeological surveys, compliance monitoring, and ruins preservation activities in the park. Projects will include a combination of the following; archeological site inventory survey, archeological site condition monitoring, monitoring park projects near archeological sites, ruins preservation projects, architectural documentation, data entry, and file organization.

Internship duties include: 1) assessing the condition of archeological sites on the north and south rim of Grand Canyon National Park, 2) assisting with recording newly discovered archeological sites, 3) assisting the architectural preservation crew with maintenance and evaluations of historic and prehistoric structures, 4) completing data entry tasks and general office work.

Knowledge and Skills Required
• Experience conducting archeological fieldwork in the southwestern United States; experience in northern Arizona archeology a benefit.
• Skilled in use of Trimble or Garmin GPS units, digital cameras, Access Databases and geographic information systems (GIS);
• Ability to read a topographic map and use a compass;
• Skilled in canyon hiking, orienteering, and backpacking in remote canyon settings;
• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision and as part of a team for extended periods of time;

Additional Details
• The internship duration would be May 23, 2011 through July 29, 2011.
• The intern would be based on the South Rim. Shared housing will be provided.
• The intern must have a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle. A government vehicle will be available for work related tasks.
• There will be field work associated with this project – the intern should have field experience in variable conditions, extensive camping / backcountry experience, and possess a willingness to work long hours.
• The intern will be compensated $500 per week during the term of their internship.
